At What Cost?

Another reason we don’t always see avarice for what it is is simply because we revel in the “Rich and Famous.” Donald Trump is considered a hero. But rarely do folks today ask whether the goal of getting rich is commendable, at what psychological or spiritual or relational cost it was achieved, what ruthless or immoral means were used, and what “good” will be done with all of this wealth. The only time folks even intervene when it comes to greed is when it leads to criminal behavior or some extreme disruption of family or personal life. For the most part, our society encourages greed, although people don’t call it greed. They call it “financial success,” “economic security,” “the good life,” or “having it all.”
